From the last time I posted to now, there have been so many huge things that have happened and have made my life so much more than I expected. Since my last post, I FINALLY came to my senses and got married...best decision I have ever made! The first year of marriage has been a great experience and I look forward to many, many more.<br />
<br />
I've made some changes professionally as well. Unexpectedly, a position in the NICU where I work opened up and I was allowed to transfer from the cardiac floor to the NICU. It has been a wonderful change that has opened up some different opportunities and has also introduced different challenges. I believe I have been able to grow more professionally. It has been a struggle, but it has been a great experience so far.<br />
<br />
Last but not least, I made it back to Washington, DC. This was an unexpected trip. The last time I was out there, I thought I'd never make it back. As my wife and I were planning our first anniversary, I found out she had never been to DC and was very interested in traveling there. We had a great time! I was able to show her around the historical sites and relive past memories. It was a great time. The three of us had a wonderful time! (and luckily baby cooperated and let mommy enjoy DC before the sickness and fatigue started).<br />
<br />
And there I leave the post. I don't know if anyone is still following this blog...if you are, I'm grateful. If not, well, I guess this was a great journaling experience. Until next time :)Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-51841026474914093312012-09-30T17:08:00.001-06:002012-09-30T17:08:53.398-06:00Potsdam, GermanyOn my second day in Germany, I signed up for a bicycle tour in a little town called Potsdam. It was about an hour outside of Berlin. It was incredibly beautiful and seemed like it was taken out of a fairy tale story. There were palaces but even the scenery and the look of the buildings in the town added to the<br />fairy tale aspect. Here are some photos I took:<br />

Part of the fun of this tour was being able to use the bikes. It was fun to be biking around and experiencing that aspect of the German Culture. It was a beautiful day as well...all of the makings for a very fun and educating experience! At the end of the tour, I treated myself to some yummy ice cream. We then headed back to Berlin as a group and I went off on another adventure, so stay tuned! :)</div>

Nevertheless, I figured I would still post.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I just recently completed a trip to Europe. It was actually very spur-of-the-moment and unlike me (as you may know, I like to plan things to death...big things). This trip came about after a very awful, horrible, no good, very bad day at work. I called my friend Robbie to see if he was interested in taking a little trip and he said he was going to Europe and asked if I wanted to tag along (I may have prompted him to ask me). Anyway, I said yes and we got our tickets. However, during part of the trip, he would be working and I would be playing. He said he was going to be in Germany and Switzerland and that, afterward, we could choose to go to either France or Italy. We both decided on France and got our tickets. However, I chose to head to Berlin first and then meet up with him in Cologne (or Köln, as they call it in German). This was also unlike me as it meant I would be traveling alone again in a foreign country (and one where I don't speak the language). I did it anyway and decided I would worry later.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Anyway, I made some plans, got a hotel, and the magic date came quickly. I flew into Dusseldorf and then had to find a way to get to Berlin (train, obviously). Luckily, the train station is at the airport and I was able to buy a ticket to Berlin. Also, thanks to my paranoia and my OCD, I found out how to print an itinerary that listed if I had to make any transfers and what cities I would have to make those transfers in. Had this not happened, I would have gotten on the train and ended up in some small German town with no idea where I was or how to get to Berlin. Anyway, I arrived in Berlin safely and took a cab to my hotel. I checked in (thankfully, the hotel personnel spoke English) without problem and had about 6 hours before bed time, so I went out an wandered. I did get lost but found this neat little "platz"</div>

It was really pleasant, there were kids running all over, and people speaking in...German. For those of you who have not had the experience, it is very weird to hear people talking and not understand a word any of them are saying. However, it's all part of the fun of the cultural experience.<div>

Anyway, when I finally found my hotel again (I was joined at the hip with my trusty city map), I wandered to a huge park and found the Freedom Tower (or Siegessaule). I saw people up at the top and so went to find the entrance. I bought a ticket and climbed the stairs to the top! It was amazing! Here is some of what I saw:</div>

I really liked this tower. This also started my first real German History lesson. I am embarrassed to say that I am 30 years old and knew very little about German History. In fact, all I knew was about WW2 and the Holocaust, but there is so much more to Germany!</div>

I then found the Brandenburg Gate. If you are like me, I had no idea what the Brandenburg Gate was. Well, one thing it was known for was, after Berlin was split into East and West, and before the Berlin Wall, people from East Germany and East Berlin would walk through the gate to West Berlin (from Communism to Capitalism) and be free from the East. Initially, it was an entrance to Berlin and was an entrance that led to the city palace. It was a sight to see and I took many pictures. Here are some:<br />

I am a huge fan of this attraction. It was so huge and absolutely amazing! The sad thing is that when the Berlin wall went up, this was right in the death strip, so nobody got to see it, except from a distance.</div>

Anyway, I kept wandering and found out where I needed to meet the next morning for my first bicycle tour. I then wandered back to my hotel and had an amazing sleep (well, not really because it was pretty warm and I was too tired to try to figure out the AC). Here are some other photos that I took as I wandered:</div>

<br />
I have stumbled on to one of Ogden City's biggest secrets and I'm now sharing it with everyone (well, everyone who reads, that is, which I fear may be no one as I have not been posting regularly).<br />
<br />
As I was walking down the street, I glanced at the street sign and noticed something strangely familiar. I was surprised that I had not noticed it before, but this time, it was very obvious. I was very excited because this street sign turned fiction into fact!<br />
<br />
As many people know, I am a huge (sometimes embarrassingly huge) Harry Potter fan! As we all remember from the last book, we are introduced to the Peverell Brothers and the Deathly Hallows (the wand, the stone, and the cloak). We also learn about the quest to unite the Deathly Hallows and that whoever does so would become Master of Death. Xenophilius Lovegood tells Harry that those who become part of the "quest" have a symbol they use to demonstrate that they are part of that quest (and that Xenophilius himself wears a necklace of that symbol). As the book continues, Harry continues to see variations of that symbol (a line for the wand, a circle for the stone, and a triangle for the cloak), and his knowledge of the Deathly Hallows continues to grow. This is what the symbol is:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVWNIQ9kDDYS1pSE2z55mmemE-fJ9T7x92clQku0iTgh_R4Nmnn28TweN3x6uJHYSiHoCSIfMBNRK6g3V5QspTjurnQyWb976Cfxxrj87aprvRU1VdtS1YxXj6AijYjLApTBfrKskecoY/s1600/Deathly+Hallows.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVWNIQ9kDDYS1pSE2z55mmemE-fJ9T7x92clQku0iTgh_R4Nmnn28TweN3x6uJHYSiHoCSIfMBNRK6g3V5QspTjurnQyWb976Cfxxrj87aprvRU1VdtS1YxXj6AijYjLApTBfrKskecoY/s1600/Deathly+Hallows.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously, as anyone who has read Harry Potter recognizes (or at least what should be recognized) is that the story is entirely fiction...or is it?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now we are back where we started. I was walking down the street and my eye caught the street sign. What do you think I saw?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI5KUaM22O8KS6wtBUdzqcQVRgs6j8sjU7oqZp1Z5Zj-vnD2AoN2NxYdu2AXb8aP3-I6tPzYNY4xDQKVOs0A0DCERkryo4-7IMCZMPHAFQJQDGLCoYFVRw0IKSqERrRmnpV9kiSJF2EIk/s1600/Street+Sign.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI5KUaM22O8KS6wtBUdzqcQVRgs6j8sjU7oqZp1Z5Zj-vnD2AoN2NxYdu2AXb8aP3-I6tPzYNY4xDQKVOs0A0DCERkryo4-7IMCZMPHAFQJQDGLCoYFVRw0IKSqERrRmnpV9kiSJF2EIk/s320/Street+Sign.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What do you think this means? You are right, it means the Deathly Hallows are real and that Ogden City is part of the Quest! And to think it took me over two years to recognize! Now, Ogden has done a good job of fooling people that this is the "Golden Spike" about to be nailed into the railroad with the sun (or moon) in the background, but they can't fool me! The secret is out ;)</div>

It seems so nerdy, but I was completely impressed that I wanted to write about it.<br />
<br />
It's no surprise that I am a huge Harry Potter nerd. While I do much prefer the books to the movies, the movies still had much to offer in many aspects (the magic, Voldemort's rebirth scene, The Cave, among others). As the movies progressed, so did the quality of the acting, and the emotions the movies evoked became more genuine, as though things really were happening for real. Other movies had similar effects. For example, the King and Queen's Ball Scene in Enchanted, Sam carrying Frodo up the slopes of Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings, the beginning of the battle for Narnia in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (as well as Aslan's return in the same movie), Stranger Than You Dreamt It in Phantom of the Opera, Changed for Good in Wicked, the death of the Phoenix in X-Men: Last Stand, and on and on. Each of these scenes, for me, provided a strong, raw emotion that made it seem genuine.<br />
<br />
There is one scene that has trumped all these other scenes as the most genuine, most inspiring, and best-acted. It has brought me to tears each time I see it. One reason is because it is the culmination of 8 movies and 7 well-written books. However, the power of the emotion comes from the acting (the type that does not seem too readily available today). If you have not read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies, you probably do not want to go on any further.<br />
<br />
The character of Severus Snape is, in my opinion, one of the most complex characters I have encountered. His true loyalties are never fully confirmed until almost the last chapter of the last book. And then, once you do find out his true loyalties, the truth comes with an arsenal of reasons as to why his loyalties are what they are; and it all comes down to Love.<br />
<br />
In my opinion, this "postponing the truth" is easier to do in writing than in visual demonstrations. The fact that only one person knows the truth makes it less likely that the truth gets out. J K Rowling was the only real person who knew the truth about Snape. In addition, she was able to describe the feelings and emotions that were all tied to this character, which then evoked in the readers their own personal emotions as well. In movies, however, it can be more difficult because the actor needs to portray that in everything they do (their body language, their facial features, sets, music, etc). In my experience, it has been rare to have the movie produce the same type of emotion that a book does. In this one instance, the movie out-did what the book was able to do.<br />
<br />
The scene is The Prince's Tale, and the actor is Alan Rickman. In the other seven movies (as well as the last one), the only emotion we see from Snape is either indifference or hatred; there's never a smile, a kind word, or anything to make the character agreeable. He also makes it quite clear that Harry would have been better off had he never existed, in Snape's mind. However, in this scene, we find out why. We find out about the relationship between Severus Snape and Lily Evans/Potter and the love that existed between the two, particularly the love that Snape had for Lily. Not the lust the world calls love, but the true love that involves sacrifice and thinking of the other person more than of self. When I saw Snape walking through the Potter house at Godric's Hollow with a dreaded anticipation in his face, when I saw him walk into the room and his face showed a tortured look, a dreaded realization, and then, when I saw Snape holding Lily's body and rocking her back and forth while sobbing, coupled with Snape's anger about Harry having been "raised like a pig for slaughter" and his answer as to why he was angry, I was amazed to know that this was all acting! It was genuine and it was real and it was genius!<br />
<br />
I have always enjoyed Alan Rickman's work, but this took it to a whole new level. I have a new-found respect for acting (as it should be, not as it is) and am amazed at those who do actually have that talent. There is a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6u7pfDG4EVs">clip of the scene</a> on YouTube I'd highly recommend the whole movie (and the whole series), but the scene will do if that's all you want to see. As you all remember from <a href="http://david-pants.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-new-homeagain-and-for-real.html">this post</a>, I bought a house (that need some extra TLC, and quick!). In <a href="http://david-pants.blogspot.com/2010/11/my-homes-rebirth.html">this post</a>, I showed the improvements that needed to be made first (CPR, if you will). The "surgery preparation" has been going well and I just wanted to post some pictures of the progress:<br />

Well, like I said, my home has been improving very nicely. I am in the process of considering a remodel of the two bathrooms, but that may be placed on the back burner. We shall see.<br />
<br />
To my lovely home, Happy Anniversary!!! Here's to a wonderful 79 years more :) And yes, I am doing my best to bring in more people...just be patient!Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-29163807221449002312011-10-16T21:57:00.000-06:002011-10-16T21:57:15.778-06:00And I'm Back...But Who Knows for How LongWoopsie! I guess it has been quite awhile since I've been on here. I don't even have the "hectic" excuse or anything like that...just pure laziness. Oh well, here's a nice little update.<br />
<br />
Technically, it hasn't been pure laziness. Things have been quite interesting since the last post. Summer with a yard kind of kicked my trash. It was hard for me to stay on top of the lawn-mowing, weeding, watering, gardening (picking all my yummy tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, and corn). I'd like to think I stayed on top of everything, but my lawn always seemed to have some yellow spots and my flower beds seemed somewhat void of flowers. I did plant four rose bushes and some holihocks, but the roses just seemed to die and the holihocks just grew leaves (but they were green!!) I seemed to have a lot of bugs, though. I was told to keep the rose bushes planted at least until next spring (just in case they really aren't dead and decide to start growing next year).<br />
<br />
I did have a decent veggie year. My peppers went pretty crazy and I have a good amount frozen in my freezer. I was very spoiled because this September, I was able to take a cucumber and a few tomatoes to work with me for munching (fresh, juicy, and free!) I am going to miss that this winter. We're going to have a tweek things a bit for next year because my tomatoes seemed to try and take over everything (I didn't get many beans).<br />
<br />
My backyard lawn is more like a weed patch (as there is more weed than there is grass), but it is looking decent. I did begin adding some lilac bushes and Rose-of-Sharon bushes. They will slowly evolve into some amazing flower beds, but at this point, I just wanted to make sure the bushes survived. They'll also need to get a little bigger before I try and add anything else. My backyard will be my masterpiece. I have some nice plans forming in my mind that I am saving for. By the time I'm through with it, it will be beautiful!!!!<br />
<br />
I ran a 10K this summer (which seemed to go by much quicker than a marathon). I was quite proud of myself because I placed 2nd in my age group. I will need to make some improvements (a 14 year-old beat me by a good 15 minutes). Nevertheless, that was my first award for a race and I am very excited about it.<br />
<br />
It has been a buzzing summer full of family activities. I've watched many movies, had many dinners, and done all I can to enjoy my brother and his family (from Brazil). I know they're here for good, but there are times where it seems to good to be true. I feel like a little child that is so excited and needs to keep checking that what he is experiencing is real (although, I guess it's not just little children that do that, although little children always are more excited and full of happiness when they go through that).<br />
<br />
Well, that's about my summer in a nutshell. Overall, it was quite fun! I'm not at all sick of the heat yet nor am I anywhere near ready for winter to come, but apparently, it will not be late. Oh well, ready or not, here we go!Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-52150141937851854242011-07-27T09:02:00.000-06:002011-07-27T09:02:18.457-06:00ksl.com - Harry Potter fans hit the theater in droves for midnight showingI made it to the news!!!!!! <br />
I was at work and the ER Clerk heated up some soup for her dinner. Because she was sitting next to me, I could smell the soup and it smelled absolutely amazing!!!!! I finally asked her what it was and she said that it was Turkey Kielbasa soup. I asked her what was in it, so she gave me the recipe. As she told me the ingredients, the first thing that came to my mind was that I would have rather died than eat this soup as a little kid. I now call it the Child's Nightmare Soup, but I tell you, this stuff is absolutely amazing!!!!!! And you can do so much with it. Anyway, here's the recipe. And I'm telling you, don't knock it until you try it!<br />
<br />
1Kielbasa sausage (or any type of sausage. I usually get the jalapeno sausage...the one shaped like a "C")<br />
1 onion<br />
celery<br />
carrots<br />
1 red bell pepper<br />
1 can black beans<br />
spinach<br />
1 tsp oregano<br />
4 c chicken broth<br />
<br />
Brown sausage and slice vegetables. Combine in a pot along with oregano, black beans, and chicken broth (NOT THE SPINACH). Bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 minutes. Throw in spinach (desired amount) and simmer for an additional 10 minutes. ENJOY!<br />
<br />
I'm sure you can see how it got the name "Child's Nightmare Soup". The fun thing is, you can add what you want. I have added green peppers as well, and I found vegetable broth. So I combined vegetable and chicken broth and it tasted amazing! Of course, I always add crushed red pepper for some additional spice. I next want to try adding potatoes to see what that does. You could add corn, cilantro (if you wanted to ruin the recipe), mushrooms, whatever veggies you can think of. And I'm telling you, it tastes absolutely amazing!!!! If your kids ever complain about what you make, make this and they'll know that whatever you made before is much better! :) Feed this to them and they'll never complain again. But, if you eat it, you'll never want to cook anything else! Enjoy, and let me know if you try it (and what you thought).Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-50984896911865685902011-02-16T15:47:00.000-07:002011-02-16T15:47:06.233-07:00Tongue Twister Anyone????I got this app on my phone (called "Random Facts") and I got this one:<br />
<br />
The hardest tongue twister in the English Language is "the sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick."<br />
<br />
Say that 5 times fast! (I can't even say it one time slow without messing something up).Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-54108831208141153682011-02-16T15:44:00.000-07:002011-02-16T15:44:50.844-07:00Spring Fever...and I Hate Ivy...and wind!My my my...quite awhile since my last post. To be honest, there have been some busy moments, but I have also been somewhat lazy. While it is no excuse, I blame the time of year. January was actually not that bad, aside from my little bout with strep throat/tonsilitis/flu--whatever it was that I got. It started off with just an ache in the back of my throat. While I was at work, things just got worse. It got to the point where I could not swallow without having a whole-body cringe. I could also feel this huge bump on the right side of my throat. When I finally got a prescription for antibiotics (I absolutely love Amoxicilin!), I went home an went to bed. Now, I need to explain that through all of this, I never had a fever. In fact, my temperature stayed around 97 degrees (F). Anyway, around 2 am, I felt the stirrings in my stomach that warned of much unpleasantness. That's right...I began vomiting. Now, you can imagine how that felt when, to swallow, it required a whole-body cringe; nevertheless, it still hurt more to swallow. Anyway, it was difficult to stay hydrated because it hurt so much to swallow (and it would just come up shortly afterwards). Luckily, I had some Gatorade in the fridge (and I think it works better than Zofran!) Anyway, the vomiting stopped (yay!!) but my throat continued to swell and I was no longer able to talk (because it hurt). The best part of all of this...I was supposed to head down to Salt Lake for MY birthday dinner. Anyway, I missed it.<br />
<br />
So, in place of my birthday dinner, I had the brilliant idea to watch "Anne Frank: The Whole Story". You guessed it...not a good idea.<br />
<br />
Anyway, January started out great, but did not stay that way. And then February started. Let me just say...most people hate January, I LOATHE February. The only good thing about it is when it ends. This year, it was ok. The best part of the beginning of February was the chance to head down the New Mexico to see my brother and his family (my niece was baptized!!!) Although it was short, it was wonderful (and absolutely freezing!)<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2hr-DOGZyLQ/TVxQnnHnMNI/AAAAAAAAAdc/Pf1QnqI6CDo/s1600/IMAG0044.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2hr-DOGZyLQ/TVxQnnHnMNI/AAAAAAAAAdc/Pf1QnqI6CDo/s320/IMAG0044.jpg" width="191" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here's my niece with my brother and sister-in-law. Such a good service!!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Anyway, after that, it was just any regular February. The last few days have been beautiful!!! The sun was out, it was warm, and spring fever hit me hard! I had the brilliant idea to go out and do some yard work since I didn't have to work and it was supposed to be in the high-fifties. DUMB IDEA! It was windy (of course!) I decided to pull some attitude and kept working. In my backyard, the sides are engulfed by ivy and the back is all shrubs. I discovered on one side of the yard, there is a set of stairs (I thought it was just dirt). So, I began pulling ivy...and pulling...and pulling...and pulling. I even found a couple rose bushes, which was tragic because I think the ivy killed the bushes (now I am really at war with the ivy). Anyway, after I ripped my hands up (yanking on ivy vines), I began to rake up the debris, which lead to me raking the entire back yard. At this point in time, the wind got stronger and so everything just scattered. I continued with the attitude and kept working. At the end of the fight (yes, I did win), I filled 6 bags (30 gallons) with debris, cleared off the steps, trimmed one rose bush (it will need many prayers), and raked the back yard. It does look pretty good, but I think I have about 10 years of work ahead of me, with just the ivy.<br />
<br />
Anyway, this post turned in to be much more than I was planning. I'll have to take some pictures of my work so you all can see what I'm talking about. Anyway, I just hope that Spring is around the corner. I know I will pay for this, but I hope that March comes in like a lion so that it goes out like a lamb. I am done with cold, wind, and being couped up in the house. I am ready to tackle my yard and make it amazing!Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-77797863754236063262011-01-08T01:24:00.000-07:002011-01-08T01:24:43.395-07:00Imagination...So, of friend of mine at work has a bunch of books that she has been lending me over the past couple of months. This all started when I told her about a conversation I had with a friend of mine. The conversation went something like this:<br />
<blockquote><i><b>Me</b></i>: My friend told me about this girl he was interested in who was married before, sealed, to her husband who died of cancer. She had three children who were obviously sealed to her and her deceased husband. My friend was curious what would happen if he decided to marry her; he could not be sealed to her because she was already sealed (and a woman can only be sealed to one man). On top of that, any children they had would be sealed to her, but not to him.</blockquote><blockquote><i style="font-weight: bold;">My Friend:</i> That is a sticky situation, and one that no one can logically explain. Even still, things will work out as they should because God is perfectly just and perfectly merciful. It's interesting you bring up this subject because there is a book series by an LDS author that centers around this topic. I'll lend them to you.</blockquote><blockquote><i style="font-weight: bold;">Me:</i> That sounds great!</blockquote>Anyway, true to her word, she brought the books in. She warned me they would be on the somewhat romantic side (and that they were...almost nauseating!) but that it had a good story (which made up for the nauseating romance). As I mentioned in a previous post, I am a bit of a sucker for love stories. It wasn't soon that I found myself hooked on this story. Luckily there were only 3 books to the series, but it still swallowed up the bulk of my free time.<br />
<br />
Have you ever read a book that has such an effect on you that you feel the characters are real and are close friends or that you actually witnessed the scenes? I remember reading Harry Potter (particularly <i>Order of the Phoenix</i>) and getting so angry and frustrated at Dolores Umbrigde and wanting to throw the book; feeling the intensity of Harry's emotions in the Forbidden Forest as his parents, Sirius, and Lupin join him as he makes his way to Voldemort. Well, these books seemed to do just that...and maybe a bit more. The characters in this LDS fiction series became so real that, once the series was over I actually felt like a good friend had moved away. I then was given another series by the same author with a reappearance of the main characters from this first series. It was great! I felt like I was having a reunion with a long lost friend. And then, in the series, one of the characters dies. I still have three books left in this second series that I don't really want to read now...because my friend (the character) is now dead.<br />
<br />
Now, I have an idea as to what some of you are thinking..."THEY'RE JUST BOOKS! The characters aren't real and you are being weird!" I agree...partly (believe me, I tell myself the same thing). However, I think media (books, music, movies) have a way of allowing you to feel emotion that you may be lacking in reality. I also believe the media has a way of taking what one feels and providing some sort of explanation that one could not come up with themselves (this sounds all very psychological, but it makes complete sense to me). I guess that's one reason why it is so important to be careful what kind of media you choose to fill your mind with. I think it has much more of an effect on us that we even realize.<br />
<br />
Why this post? First of all, I think it was a way for me to process both the books I just read. Also, it was a sounding board for me as I tried to figure out the huge effect of the series. One thing is for sure...I need to get a person to talk to. It's nicer to have something talk back! ;)Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-8865319637268672252010-12-07T09:30:00.000-07:002010-12-07T09:30:31.681-07:00Christmas Preparations<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I really love this time of year. There really is magic that seems to be in the air (and yes, it's even stronger than the ever-present inversion). My sister and brother-in-law (and little nephew) were able to come out for Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas Season. On the Monday after Thanksgiving, we went to see the lights at Temple Square. It was FREEZING!!!!! Needless to say, we were only there for maybe about an hour. We were, however, able to snap a few shots of the lights (although, as my brother mentioned, they are still the same as they were last year and the year before that and the year before that...) Anyway, here is a nice family shot...I think it turned out great (and no, we don't have a shot of us at this location).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This shot turned out great</td></tr>
</tbody></table> After our time at Temple Square, we went back home for a nice roaring fire along with some hot chocolate (made with milk...and Whole Milk nontheless!) It was so much fun. It was sad to see my Sister and Brother-in-law head back home the next day.<br />
<br />
Anyway, since it was now time that I could put up my Christmas decorations without causing World War III, I put up the tree and strung the lights. I then spruced up the fireplace :). I had a friend at work who asked if she could decorate my tree, to which I said yes. She and her two kids came up to decorate it (and it was really cute! Her kids were so excited it made me laught. It was a lot of fun!) Anyway, it is gold and red and I really love it!!! I included a picture with the lights and one without the lights on.<br />

As you can tell, I am still missing a tree topper and a tree skirt. No worries, I am still on the look out for the appropriate ones. However, at this point, I think it looks amazing! :)<br />
<br />
Here's a picture of the fireplace. I tried to do a picture with the lights on, but it really did not show up well. I love the garland...it's gold as well :). I also am expecting a wreath (real) that will provide the nice pine scent. I gotta have that for Christmas :)<br />

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas! It really is my favorite time of year and I hope it is an enjoyable one for all! I am including a link to the First Presidency Christmas Devotional because I found it very inspiring. As most of you, if not all, understand, it is about an hour long, but well worth the time. Enjoy :)<br />

I knew if I took it apart, I would never pull it out to try it again. It's a beautiful picture but a nasty puzzle! The plan is to finish it, glue the pieces together, and put it in the frame that is hanging on the wall.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Well, there are some of the accomplishments. I have not done anything with the bathrooms yet and, obviously the master bedroom is not completed, but I am now living in my house and loving it!!!!! It can now snow all it wants, I am ready! I get Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years in my house. Life is good!Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-6973241739249108822010-10-31T23:11:00.000-06:002010-10-31T23:11:19.232-06:00I'M A HOME OWNER!!!Well, it is official...as of Friday, October 29, I'm a new home owner. I have the keys and the paperwork to prove it. Friday, I transferred the electricity, gas, water, sewage, and refuse into my name. I then went to war with the wall paper and the glass paneling in the house (and yes, I won!) Do not fret...pictures are soon to follow. By the time I'm done, this house will be mine inside and out :)Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-14931660885270909872010-10-27T08:46:00.000-06:002010-10-27T08:46:05.026-06:00Closing!!I close at 10:00 am on Oct 28, 2010 :)<br />

On Friday, Oct 29, the ripping up and painting project begins :)Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-61959988285814820052010-10-24T20:48:00.000-06:002010-10-24T20:48:54.950-06:00My New Home!!!...Again and for real :)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So, as many of you (if not all) know, I have been under contract with a house and, if all is going well, I should close this Thursday, Oct 28. Coincidentally, this falls on one of my sister's birthday and I only thought it fitting that she should pay for it. She did not agree...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyway, I've wanted to show everyone, but because it is under contract, I can't find anywhere online that has the listing with pictures. So, I had my realtor take me there so I could take some pictures to share. In addition, this provides an opportunity for Before and After shots (believe me...this house needs some TLC with the decor). I'm sure by the time you finish looking at the pictures, you will understand what I mean.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Now, I do not believe that pine trees belong in yards. They are too big and bulky to compliment anything (unless they are kept healthy, but I don't want to work on keeping one healthy). They belong in parks or in the wild. However, this is not in my yard, so I can still enjoy it (particularly in the winter). </tbody></table>So, there's a brief tour of the house. There is not basement (which will be nice in about 60 years when I can't maneuver stairs...I'll still be able to stay at home :)<br />
<br />
I am super excited about this purchase. Hopefully, all will work out and I will be the new owner on Thursday. The ripping out and painting up project will begin soon afterward. As soon as it is finished, new pictures will be posted for everyone's enjoyment :)<br />

For those who are curious, female input has been given but a male (myself) is making the final decision (because it is mine!!) :). There is no girlfriend or wife in my life right now, so keep that in mind. Obviously, when she decides to come around, she won't mind how the house looks (as long as it is tidy). Lucky for her, I'll like her enough to allow her to make some changes.Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-72855144481199278152010-10-12T09:16:00.000-06:002010-10-12T09:16:05.924-06:00A New Temple!!!!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Since the construction for the new <a href="http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/brighamcity/">Brigham</a> <a href="http://brighamcitytemple.info/constructionph1.html">City</a> <a href="http://lds.org/temples/main/0,11204,1919-1-610-1,00.html">Temple</a> began, I have wanted to go take a look; for me, there's an excitement about seeing the construction happen. So, a couple friends and I headed up that way to take some pictures. After some heckling and confused-looking faces, we made our way to the temple site, which resulted in these pictures. And yes, I know it's "only a hole in the ground" but it's the idea that a temple is coming that makes it exciting and piques my curiosity :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

They'll unveil the design at the groundbreaking...I can't wait to see what it's going to look like</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXND94gIyV7LQwDDRs-uafmYkh8pHvPup1ejf7Fq5bYl1ApoO7_0BvW3OL_7TJIM_P9MnCN4s8vPXWVoic3xpIuQ-Y2a49-pOohgjPkK27_kBkzTrPUsfmXhr0RPgp-JaM3Sw1oXtsZHs/s1600/BC+Temple+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXND94gIyV7LQwDDRs-uafmYkh8pHvPup1ejf7Fq5bYl1ApoO7_0BvW3OL_7TJIM_P9MnCN4s8vPXWVoic3xpIuQ-Y2a49-pOohgjPkK27_kBkzTrPUsfmXhr0RPgp-JaM3Sw1oXtsZHs/s320/BC+Temple+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

<li>full bed (with mattress)</li>
<li>shelves (PVC)</li>
<li>sheets and unused dish cloths</li>
<li>another lamp</li>
<li>a set of plates</li>
<li>a Christmas tree (with decorations)</li>
</ul><div>It was a good haul! That and I only spent $160 :)</div><div><br />
</div><div>As far as the house goes, I am still waiting to hear about the loan. The inspection and the appraisal have already been completed (and the house has passed). </div><div><br />
</div><div>Other things I am looking at are the following:</div><div><ul><li>Painting (Kitchen - Yellow; Front Room - Beige; Bedroom - Blue; Bedroom - Green; Bedroom - Yellow, Blue, Green, or Beige...whatever I seem to like best when the time for choosing has come). This is obviously a want, but most likely will be granted. Obviously, the colors will be shades of the listed color and not just the regular color. I am already going through paint samples to try and choose which shade.</li>
<li>Washer and Dryer - This is a need if I want to wash my clothes. It will be granted.</li>
<li>Couch/Love Seat/Chair - This is a want and I may have to wait until a later date.</li>
<li>Tear out carpet and re-finish hardwood floors - I know the carpet needs to be changed (and will be changed) in two of the bedrooms, but I am not sure if I want to re-carpet the rooms or keep the hardwood floors underneath. I'm planning on keeping the front room carpet for the next few years. I may re-carpet the bedrooms and then, when the time comes, get rid of the carpet in the front room and then buff up the hardwood floors. I'm still trying to decide.</li>
</ul><div>I also have some other ideas to fix up the house, but those will have to wait for quite some time. These ideas include:</div></div><div><ul><li>placing molding around the windows</li>
<li>remodeling the bathrooms</li>
<li>replacing the kitchen linoleum</li>
<li>replacing the inside doors</li>
</ul><div>I think I may just end up painting the house and removing the carpet in one bedroom (the deep-red color...definitely not going to stay. It's way too retro!!) and then saving for the other projects. Luckily, I have a few years to save money and make changes. This is going to be pretty fun I think.</div></div><div><br />
</div><div>So, there's the update. I will keep you posted with any additional news.</div>Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-42302755222333095672010-10-07T23:27:00.000-06:002010-10-07T23:27:38.836-06:00Baby Steps to Home-Ownership(Pictures will soon follow)<br />
<br />
As many of you know, I started looking for a house around May. It soon became an ordeal that was much bigger and much more involved than I expected. I will spare all the details until a later time when I will be able to go more in depth about my experience. For now, I will talk about furnishing my soon-to-be (hopefully) home.<br />
<br />
McKay-Dee Hospital Center owns three houses that used to serve as guest houses for family members of patients in the hospital. Recently, a new building was built on the hospital campus that now serves that purpose. The hospital plans to sell the old houses, but first, they did a yard sale...<br />
<br />
Everything in the houses was available for purchase. A co-worker of mine was in a club of the hospital which gave her first dibs on the items in the houses, so she took me with her and I went on my very first shopping spree (well, for housing stuff). I got 5 lamps, a huge framed picture (that I really really like), a lighthouse, some decorative plates, a clock, bunk beds (mattresses and all...although I am a bit concerned about the mattresses), and a dresser (oh yeah, and a glass casserole dish). You may think it was a fortune...$63.25 (an yes, the decimal point is in the correct place)!!!!! I was super excited! Three of the lamps even match and I pretty much furnished an entire bedroom (not mine, obviously...I get a bigger, newer bed). Needless to say, I was pretty excited and am more excited to move in (I am still waiting to hear back about the loan).<br />
<br />
Anyway, I thought I would share the fun news. There will be more to come about the house-buying experience, so stay tuned :)Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-49101358052552244012010-10-03T23:26:00.000-06:002010-10-03T23:26:33.442-06:00Another First in Utah...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So, I decided to take a drive to see Fall. I ventured into Morgan County (a first time that I can remember) and saw Devil's Slide (another first). It was pretty neat! Of course, I took some pictures, so I wanted to post them. From what I was told, people used to be able to slide down it (I'm guessing they slid on something, because it looks like it would be more of a tumble if you did it just on your behind). My parents and I did a little hike up to Dog Lake. The hike was amazing because the weather was beautiful (no wind, no clouds, perfect temperature, and quiet). While we were there, a couple moose decided to join us. However, we made them stay on the other side of the lake (no discrimination, just some safety concerns. We didn't want to scare them too badly). It was nice thought because we could hear them talking, along with the birds chirping and the little breezes of wind that would come and go. In addition, there was the smell of the woods (pure, clean, crisp) that had a mixture of pine and leaves that are starting to fall. I'm surprised we even left! Here are some pictures. Unfortunately, my camera does not record sound. And...you'll have to look hard for the moose, but I promise they were there! :)<br />

</tbody></table>After we finished out hike, my sister, brother-in-law, and their kids met us up at the trail head where we made a camp fire and cooked us some foil dinners (there's nothing better!!!!) and some s'mores (courtesy of my sister). It was so fun to see them (my nieces and nephews are getting too big...and that's only one family, the one I see more regularly!) Unfortunately, my other siblings were unable to come (due to distance or previous engagements). I missed them all, but it was still fun to be with those who were able to come. Family really is great!!!!Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04115896162707649447noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3389773126004062367.post-13768151036201345932010-09-26T23:05:00.000-06:002010-09-26T23:05:10.981-06:00Play (and Wish List)So, I went up to Logan and took some pictures. Again, I was quite proud of some of the ones I took and had to share them. Looking through these pictures made me start wishing...I'd like a nice new camera (that can do many more tricks) and and iMac (yes, I plan on converting to Apple...my heart is already there). I guess we'll have to see what happens. In the mean time, I'll share what my handy little camera is capable of.<br />
